I’m sitting in the quiet work lab at Denver Community Media, and outside just two blocks away is the No Kings March–I sat outside capturing a moment of sunshine, fresh breath, and having a regrounding moment after a series of incredible meetings and coaching sessions (which I’ll tell you more about in a moment). I sat there with no camera, no distraction, just a regrounding.

As I sat outside, I felt like I was living such an American moment—a snapshot of our collective complexity: beloveds on the street in urgent need of care and housing; the cool-style beauty of a shiny evergreen classic emanating Brown pride; the quiet bravery of two trans women; and a mile of protesters chanting for liberation, shouting “Black Lives Matter” and/or “Trans Lives Matter.” Whichever it is–I’m all for it.

And then I’m thinking how much I have loooooved that feeling–being in the streets, chanting, and marching in solidarity for a common cause. I also remember that since about 2000, yeah, that year–I found I don’t really have what it takes to be a frontline revolutionary. It’s also at this time that I committed to using my platform as a vehicle for social change–stating that the revolution must begin within so that we can show up for the work for the struggles and creating sutainable systemic change.

Watching the world march outside reminded me exactly why the work I’m doing behind these glass walls matters. It brought me back to a series of deep downloads from this week—from my own coaching sessions to a raw strategy meeting with my team.

We sat down specifically to look at the future facilitators we are calling into this movement—the people who will eventually carry this lineage of Diasporic Dance and Somatic Healing into their own communities—and what they are actually up against. When I asked my team who we think these leaders are and what they’re navigating right now, what came out were these visceral, raw responses.

Here is the invocation of thought we uncovered—the raw truth of what our people are battling, seeking, and building toward. As you read this, I wonder: which of these mirrors your own heart right now?

• 🔥 The Battle: Our people are navigating the “Dumpster Fire” that is our nation; the deconstruction of religious trauma, and a literal war on our bodies. We are holding the heavy reality of the erasure of our rights and the very real fear of simply being in public with our identities and cultures. Between the shadow of ICE, the rise of AI, and suffering from community wounds— the weight of existing in Amerikkka is heavy.

• 🌿 The Interest & The Medicine: There is a deep hunger for Somatic & Emotional Literacy and a radical Alternative Lifestyle that lives off-the-beaten-path. We are seeking to break free from limiting familial and religious values while reclaiming our bodies and bringing back body positivity. We are returning to the land, to nature-based practices, and to the feel-good liberation of Diasporic Dance and choreography as a counter-narrative to systemic exclusion.

• 🧿 The Fears & The Identities: The weight of the Identity Tax is real: the exhaustion of navigating multiple identities and roles while trying to stay grounded. We fear the Success Disconnect—not knowing how to show up as an Embodiment Leader who can actually protect their own field from “Client Vampires” and the energetic drain of others. We are fighting the Perfectionism Trap, the “Dancer Body” myth, and a total lack of structural support.

• ✊🏾 The Work We Are Doing Together: We are building toward Financial Freedom & Independence, Divesting from Capitalism, Body Sovereignty, and the Vulnerability of Visibility—the courageous goal of being seen and witnessed exactly as we are. We are mastering the Mechanics of Movement and the strategic voice needed to amplify the werk, and build the internal trust and confidence required to lead and exist authentically in public.

As they shared these very heart full and soul igniting responses–we stated it then and there. We are solving all the problems of the world–through SOL VIDA®!!!! OHHHH MY FAAAAACKING GAAAAWD.

I know we’re doing good, deep and big work, but something about this conversation blew my heart, mind and soul open–like it’s not just a slogan, this shit is a reality, and this is my way of protesting Amerikkka.

Okay, so now I have to share what happened between my latest coaching session and team meeting this morning going over the draft for our landing page for the Unwind & Grind™ Facilitator Training–fucking A yall, I’m tearing up tears of happy-cathartic-joy just thinking about what we’re about to offer.

If I’ve learned anything on my entrepreneur journey–is that when it’s right, it’s so right (this is also a co-signed life hack too). I can’t tell you how many notes, whiteboards, and downloads I’ve had about creating a training program.

Damn, I’m feeling positive we’re locking it in and as one of my co-conspirators said, this is just what the world needs right now—this is exactly what people need and are looking for.

I’m feeling really thankful for my time in the Bay area–offloading a giant project that was consuming a great deal of energy from me. Bringing on co-stewards to care for our vessel, Octavia Sea Trout, was exactly the medicine I needed. While I was there, it felt hard to get clarity on this training—but the second I arrived at SFO, the download for the full program completely came through.

I know I’ve been teasing this out, but damn, time takes time.

All of this to say—this is my dedication to protest and revolution in the world. All that wobbliness and uncertainty I felt at the beginning of the year was for a reason. I was aiming to go bigger, and it wasn’t big enough. I had to find my most audacious, wildest version of how I’m really attempting to scale this rainbow magical, healing light embodied liberation that is SOL VIDA® and Unwind & Grind™.

Unwind & Grind™ Tour Teaser

Y’all, this year of the Fire Horse is no joke. Is it going really fast for you? I’ve talked to several people and it’s like… we’re going 100 miles per hour and yet, most of it is “overwhelmingly good,” minus the terror (that feels like a terrible and such a true sentence to write).

I’m letting you into some of what I’m growing through today. As someone who was raised as an only child, a single mama, and has spent the majority of my adulthood (until recently—hee hee) in more of the perpetually single, non-monogamous, wanderluster category—not only has it been historically hard for me to ask for and receive help, I have also been beckoned by my business coach to reach out to a friend/colleague anytime I am thinking of doing something alone.

This may be my hardest business homework just yet. LOL.

This also comes right at the moment where I was starting to lose my wits. Living in my “intergenerational rainbow magic hour” (aka family home), I’ve been surrounded by other people’s energies waaaay more than I’m used to and was craving, yearning, begging for ALONE TIME… Well, I’m having it.

Blessed to be at our family sailboat in the Bay Area—I’m cleaning the fuck out of this vessel. It’s a responsibility which, admittedly, I’ve been struggling with… I’ve had this notion for a while now, and am finally activating bringing on a group of co-stewards to help love and care for this sanctuary—so in some way I am doing my homework. Ha ha… it was a huge button to push play on, and I was so surprised when I put the call out on the Bay Area QTBIPOC Hive listserv, I got waaaay more of a response than anticipated.

It’s like that often for me… this thing I’m feeling weary and scared of doing, I finally do, with minimal attachment, and then BAM: the Universe works its wonders, and suddenly I won’t be alone in this care.

Same story with SOL VIDA®. Coming into this year, I’ve been operating from a lack of base monetary resources for a team, so my internal story goes a little something like… you’ve got to do it by yourself again, no one’s gonna work for you if you don’t have funding. Well, fact of the matter is—we are actively changing systems right now (the matriarchy is aliiiiivvveee). And I’ve learned, yeah, you’re right, in the world of patriarchy and capitalism, no one is going to work via creative exchange… but in the land of SOL VIDA®… that’s just not true. I’m so pleased to share that two Co-Conspirators have joined forces with me in the form of creative exchange where it feels like everyone is literally winning. How effing cool is that?!

So March is about tightening systems and getting assets ready—calling in co-stewards and co-conspirators to help us prep for the SOL VIDA® tour in Colorado and beyond, and getting the back end of our Pilot training up and popping.

And another part of my business homework this month is to track: where is expansion happening?

And I’ve got to say, it’s so cool to feel that the systems are starting to flow. I’m getting calls, texts, and emails from my dream clients. I’m looking forward to leading an immersion workshop of The Embodied Revolution at the University of Denver with an Afrofutures theme; Unwind & Grind™ is coming to Bozeman, MT on April 18; I’m co-leading a Starlight Movement Mass for People of Color with my cosmic soul dance brother, Ramon Parish, on June 5 in Boulder, CO; and solidifying dates with folks who are in the work of transformative justice and melanated queer liberation! It’s like everything I felt like I was putting out years ago is starting to show itself.

Speaking of all the things I’ve put out over the years… you may remember that I’m working on a brand documentary. Holy footage… there’s so much that’s never been seen. And as I prepare to go on tour worldwide, I, along with Struck Media, put together a 1-minute Tour Teaser, which I think so belovedly captures the essence and feelings of Unwind & Grind™.

This past Sunday, I spent the late morning at the Zen Center of Denver and stared at a creamy-colored white wall for 25 minutes with the intent to stop thinking and moving for the duration. After the sit, I joined a discussion on impermanence and identity... I wondered what life would be like if we stripped ourselves of our identities—to find a pure and primal state. It’s something I think about a lot.

Honestly, with the Lunar New Year, Ramadan, Lent, and Mercury Retrograde—among all the other external shifts and inputs—there is some salve in the permission, the belonging, and the inevitable change that is bound to be a part of life through this invitation of impermanence.

I feel like I made a fool of myself multiple times this year. I came into the year telling you I was sick of these one-off events and didn’t want to do drop-in spaces—and then it felt like I proceeded to do that very thing. I forced, fumbled, and felt wobbly and weird the whole time I was doing it.

I’ve had to accept that my audience is changing. I’ll never forget my mother telling me the night before I did my first launch this year: “You’re not selling to your friends.”

For some reason, that really stung. I know I’m not a failure, even though it feels like it sometimes. I’m just learning through experimenting; I’m aligning and anchoring with where my energy actually wants to go. I feel like I’m being required to release a whole bunch of shit—especially the ways I’ve been used to achieving things.

Just like my “Robot Friend” told me… I am a “mother to a global embodiment lineage.”

That feels so big and audacious. Who am I to say that’s who I am? And how am I going to become that when I feel so caught up between identities and worlds?

I will also share that I’ve been working with an affirmation for a while that goes a little something like:

I am Katharine Dunham.

I am Cleo Parker Robinson.

I am Rosangela Silvestre.

It goes on through all my favorite dance lineages and dancestors.

Well, I remember all at once this thing about impermanence and identity. I know that this movement that has been channeled through me is full of magic and I want to pass that magic on. I have wanted to do this for so long—and now I have actually created the space and time to do it. I can imagine it having an even greater impact when I loosen my grip and allow it to ripple throughout the world.

Everything in this next cycle is leading up to the SOL VIDA® Practitioner & Unwind & Grind™ Pilot Training, which includes touring Unwind & Grind™ and calling in a cohort of 11 practitioners.

I am recruiting those ready to learn the ways of embodied healing justice and using dance as resistance—the ones who have a background in dance and movement and are craving sovereign freedom from these systems of oppression. I’m calling in the artists who are tired of being "starving" and the professional who is tired of the corporate "grind," and the entrepreneur who has already started the journey and is craving the community and somatic support to actually sustain the work. I want to build with those who are ready to shift normalcy and finally architect the life of their dreams through embodied liberation.

I still don’t know exactly when or where it came from, but even in my then-frazzled state—navigating what I would later learn was my Saturn Return, a custody battle, and the raw birth of becoming an entrepreneur—I channeled the words:

Unwind & Grind.

What the… was that? I sure didn’t know, but I received a download and a formula to hold a workshop that would fuse form and freedom. Little did I know it would transform the lives of a devoted clan of dancers and eventually make appearances worldwide.

I’ll never forget sitting at a table at a community fair at Sacred i Yoga with my newly designed flyers. That was where I met my first Unwind & Grind veteran and devotee, Mary. She was ultra-excited, and before long, we began doing those dances every Friday.

From those early days, this movement grew the way the best things do: through word of mouth. It wasn’t about marketing; it was about people bringing people. It was about someone having a breakthrough on the dance floor and immediately thinking, “I need to bring so and so to this!”

There was something about it. There was this intersection of spirituality and learning “provocative” moves to, at times, “inappropriate” music—all fused with a SOL VIDA® invocation that I now describe as calling in the rainbow healing light. We bathed our bodies in that light, setting intentions, and after we did those group “across the floor” moments that allowed the choreographer in me to flourish, we would get so free.

I didn’t call it ecstatic dance then; I didn’t even know the word “somatics.” As is a trend in my life, I was just a little ahead of the times. It became, quite simply, The Official Divine Booty Shaking Experience.

We rolled, jumped, laughed, and cried. We spent the time after class connecting through casual conversations that helped us make sense of everything troubling us. I was vulnerable, too—navigating custody, co-parenting, dating, and beginning to delve into my queerness. I was met equally by my community’s hardships: divorce, births, deaths, new parenthood, and complicated relationships.

Every time we did this dance, something magic happened. Suddenly, everything we felt worried, ashamed, or sad about shifted. There was a remembrance of how connected we are: soul to spirit, and body to soul.

The Truth: Dance Saves Lives

These experiences have shown me exactly what I’ve known since I began dancing seriously at age nine: Dance Saves Lives.

In my experience, our greatest pain often becomes our greatest gift. I’ve navigated abandonment, survival, addiction, and scarcity. No matter what, through a 25+ year career, I always come back to the dance. It always reminds me of who I really am and that there is a place that makes sense for me.

As an artist, I’ve had a hunger to train in as many styles as possible. I was classically trained in Ballet, Modern, and Jazz; I went on to study West African, Egyptian, Symbology of the Orixas, Samba, and more. So many times when I stepped into other people’s dance spaces, I felt painfully self-aware. Whether it was my cellulite in constricting black tights or the “woo-woo” of spiritual spaces that lacked integrity, I felt the gap. I found myself looking around and not seeing enough people like me: Queer, Black, multiracial, big-bodied, alternative folks.

I’ve spent much of the last decade in criticism of a dance world that is often competitive, splashy, and lacking in social justice frameworks. It became my mission to provide a remedy to the spaces that demand perfection, that have us injuring ourselves physically and emotionally, or that leave us hanging when we’re doing the deep work.

The Reclamation

I have devoted years to listening to this soul calling that was given to me at 28. Now, on the cusp of 48, I have heard the clearest call yet: This is the medicine. I fought myself and I fought this medicine. I thought, Surely there’s something else. But when your soul is calling, it sets you into an otherworldly energy.

As someone who has come out of rave culture, ecstatic dance, yoga, and musical theatre, I am devoted more than ever as the steward of this gift channeled in 2006.

I’ll admit, I still get self-conscious about my playlists. It’s crazy how much race still affects us. I used to worry if a song was too white or too Black—until I realized my medicine is the bridge. The fusion of all I am is exactly what activates the magic. My playlists are a “whole ass journey” because my soul is a “whole ass journey” through every vibration I’ve ever lived. I know those sounds take me there—to spirit, to release, to remembrance—and I know they will take you there, too.

There is a specific magic in the U & G map: from the invocation to the warm-up, to learning SOL VIDA® moves that give us a vocabulary in Diasporic Dance, to finally setting the floor free. You move however you wish, in tune with yourself, without worrying about who is in the room, what your body looks like, or if you are “good enough.”

At the end, in that vibe of stillness, a lightening takes place. We talk, we make meaning of the world, and we feel okay. We feel okay because dance saved our lives—again.

It’s now 2026. I am claiming this movement medicine. like never before. This is the year I stop fighting the calling and start leading the liberation. I am standing in my center, offering this sanctuary to the ones who are ready to move and be free.

My Roots🌲

✨🌌✨Mixed gurl from a German/Austrian (maybe Russian) mom from South Dakota and papa a was a rolling stone Black American (most likely Cherokee/Chippewa) ancestry, only child of mi madre and “last” child of a brother, and three sisters who are dispersed in the Michigan and Illinois areas.

✨🧑🏾‍🏫✨When I was a young person and I dreamed of what I’d been when I grew up–I always saw stages and imagined myself as a teacher. At this time, I also didn’t know that I wasn’t Mexican, and was in fact, grew up in a “love see no color” philosophy, and was in fact—Black and multiracial which I learned quickly upon moving to the East side of Denver in a very Black and White world.

Trauma Turned Medicine🌻

✨🤹🏾✨A once shy and quiet, a once caught up in the wildness of intoxication, mind numbing, addict of tobacco and weed, former alcohol abuser, turned overthinker, ruminator, migraine getter, stick-it-to-the-man and how do I get out of the grind, performing arts teacher.

✨🩸✨I have a body that has changed, is changing.. It’s a 47 year old body that has lived most of its perimenopausal journey, gave a natural birth with a midwife and doula 25 years ago. An achy, thiccc body, that was resigned to believing I’d just be one of those old Black dance teachers who taught while sitting down with a staff to drum the beat.

✨🥷🏾✨I have done deep delves into 5 Rhythms, embodied rites of passage processes, a dance warrior who is deeply into expressing the Symbology of the Orixas as gateways to spirit, ancestors and the spirit world.

✨🎭✨Dance, theatre and being a part of embodied healing justice circles have called me to life, purpose, and show me how to express myself authentically, to process the harms of the world, to make meaning of the world, and ultimately as an outlet to express my deep and relentless emotions.

✨♾️✨I believe that I came here in this lifetime to heal the trauma of sexual abuse and violence in my previous lifetime, and this lifetime as a survivor date rape and molestation. As a “promiscuous” young adult I’ve navigated many a lover with varied degrees of sovereignty, surrender and sadness.

Queer AF🏳️‍🌈

✨🏳️‍🌈✨I didn’t admit or integrate the fact that I’m super queer until the year 2011… Finally coming to terms that after touching, kissing and playing with enough yonis that I had an identity in that.

✨🦄✨I am genderqueer and this feels new(er) too. Many a time, when I’ve looked in the mirror and I see my ancestral bone structure, I can’t help but see (Je Je–the queer two-spirit ancestor I channeled in a meditation at a Radical Faerie Gathering) and I wonder how many can see the boy in me–that’s felt rare and I know it’s there.

✨🫦✨I practice consensual non-monogamy and have identified as a solo-polyamorist, fluid, pansexual, significant other, comet, wannabe unicorn, and believe in relationship anarchy.

My Dharma—Healing My Sensuality & Creating Spaces for Safer Expression🍑

✨🫀✨I’m a multipotentialite, renaissance being and have many gifts (as do you, I am sure). I’d say that some of my treasures that may be obvious and on the underground including: being a safe space holder, I’ve somehow always been able to bring about radical and empowered self-expression in others, I’m good at immediately getting people into their bodies and out of their heads, I’m a brilliant choreographer who had a big stint in the musical theatre world–choreographing over 40 musicals. I’ve had a taste of directing plays and dance productions and dance theatre is a must have gem in my existence.

✨🫴🏾✨When I think about what my even older self will be–I imagine circles of sensuality, healing bodies through movement and consensual touch, living in a natural environment, hosting comrades who are passing through–writing more and more, making magic potions, salves, and tinctures.

✨📔✨Since 5th grade, I have identified as a writer. It began with our daily classroom diaries, where alas I had a place to say everything that I was feeling– a great salve for a child prone to shyness. I made it my mission to study and get a degree in Writing and Performance, assured I was to be a journalist–dreaming of my byline in newspapers, magazines and on the covers of books. I loved taking creative writing, had a substantial poetry life, and also love interpreting words with the body and voice and have been very much influenced by the creation of ChoreoPoems through the work of Ntzoake Shange.

A Nomadic Nature Worshipping Spirit 🗺️

✨🌍✨As a globe trotter–it has been my dream to have a loft in the city, a cabin in the woods and a cottage by the sea. I’ve learned that life often gives you what you want and not always as you have imagined it. I currently co-steward a sailboat in the SF Bay Area and enjoy a glorified glamping lifestyle when I go there to work, take creative retreats, and delve into the QT/BIPOC experience like I have never experienced anywhere else. In 2020, when the pandemic hit– I received a fairly immediate directive from the spirit world that I was to attain land in southwest Colorado, which I did in a most synergistic way and am now building a rest, respite, retreat and residency center / watering hole to serve my family and extended relations. I have a nomadic heart with deep desires for home base.

✨So… these are my identities, and there are more… I may add to this at some point. For now, it feels so good to have a place where I can write like this and share ALL OF ME✨ Yipee!

✨🦄✨Rainbow Light Warriors came to me in a dream. It’s a term that is a combination of things, the first association being with the Rainbowarriors song from Coco Rosie, whose lyrics just say it all for me.

It also comes from the essence of SOL VIDA (Sun Life), which is a healing rainbow light energy that has been with me since the age of 19, almost in the form of a spirit guide, and ultimately has become my life’s work to transmit and steward this light through my movement experiences and as the title of my business and movement methodology. It also captures the Queer Rainbow experience.

The “Warrior” element is a vow—it is my fierce commitment to making this world a better place by drawing upon the ancient, enduring wisdom of nature and Indigenous peoples, and honoring that the revolution starts from within and then ripples out.
